Dallas had a booming cotton industry that exploded in the mid-to-late 1800s. Some historians would say cotton was the backbone of the U.S. economy at this time, and Dallas was right in the center of it all. A century later another industry took hold of the city - garment manufacturing. In the 1960s, Dallas was producing 20,000+ garments a day and home to at least 200 manufacturers producing their own unique fashions. In these glory days, garments were even being tagged with “Made in Dallas” labels.

Then came Neiman Marcus, which opened on Elm Street in downtown Dallas in 1907. The department store officially put Dallas on the map as an American fashion hub. Then there was Highland Park Village, the first planned shopping center in America, which opened in 1931 and is still a popular shopping destination today. In short, Dallas has always been on the frontier of fashion in the United States.

Flash forward to 2023 and Dallas – also known as the “Big D” – claims 21 Fortune 500 companies, the largest urban arts center in the country, and the highest number of shopping centers per capita in the United States. The Census Bureau estimates that the population of the Dallas-Fort Worth metro area has grown by over 23% since 2010 and is on track to overtake Chicago as the nation’s third largest metropolitan area in the next decade.
